Media Kits 101

WHO: Do I need a media kit? YES, you do! Media Kits aren’t just for big, fancy schmancy corporations. A marvelous media kit is a must have if you want to seek out sponsors or advertisers, get your work featured or sold, and to gain exposure for your brand.

WHAT: So, what is a media kit anyway? A media/press kit is a creatively packaged resume that can be either hard copy or digital. These kits are generally for promotional use. Your media kit should contain all of the pertinent info on your company but is also your time to brag a bit. Show off your products and accomplishments.

  • Introduce Your Business
  • Explain Your Product/Service Benefits
  • Demographic & Psychographic of Your Customer Base
  • List Your Products/Services
  • Press Coverage
  • Explain How Your Product/Service Benefit the Reciever
  • Contact Information

WHEN: You should get your media kit together ASAP, there is no time like the present to begin promoting your business. Keep in mind that publications usually plan in advance for the four seasons. If you want to share your great New Years inspired dress collection, don’t wait until December to submit it. About 3 months lead-time is sufficient for most publications.

WHERE: Media Kit complete? Now where do they go... First do your homework on your customer or market. Find out where they are shopping, what they are reading, etc. It wouldn’t benefit you to contact a popular vegan magazine, if you are the purveyor of bacon wrapped turduckens. Once you know who your target market is, start your campaign to magazines, websites, wholesalers, and other media outlets that may be interested. It’s a great idea to have your digital media kit available to view or download from your website as well.

WHY: If you don’t let the world know about you and your greatness, who will? Customers have to know about your products or services to use them, so tell them about it!

TIPS:

  1. Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Make sure your media kit reflects who you are, but don’t be gimmicky and distract from your brand.
  2. Interactive media kits have become very popular, try creating your own using sites like Glossi, Issuu, or Zeen
  3. Keep it current! Try to update your media kit as often as possible. This is really easy with digital versions
